These act like spells and can be hit in the middle of combat. After you've gotten past the fifth level and have chosen your specialty, you will also be able to choose certain fighting styles. Mythic has taken an interesting approach to this problem of tanks being bored with their options in a fight. But that should just be the beginning parts of the game to get you built up for the real challenge of stealing and holding relics for your realm, but I'll get more into that in a minute.Īs with most of these games, melee combat is initiated with the click of a button at which point you pretty much stand around and wait for the dice to be thrown. Other than killing animals that, for the most part, mind their own business, I spent a lot of time wandering the world, looking at things and getting lost. I spent a lot of time running around hacking little animals into littler pieces. I've found that the actual gameplay is much like EverQuest in the beginning levels of the game. Once you've done that, you can start learning the specific skills that are available to each specialization.
At fifth level, I could then choose to become a paladin, mercenary, or armsman by choosing to join the guild with which whatever specialty you want is associated. For example, my first character, Fatty, was a Highlander fighter. Later on, when you hit level five, you will choose a specialty in that general area. Things work a little differently for each realm, but for the most part, you have to pick a general area of expertise when you create a character. You can't have everything, right? So I clicked on Albion and was taken to the character creation screen.Īfter your race has been decided, you can choose from the various career paths available. At this juncture of the testing process, only the realms of Midgard and Albion were open to me, so to begin, I went with the realm of Albion, home of Camelot and all of those great Arthurian legends, which will undoubtedly be changed around a little bit for the sake of good gaming. So to start things off, you have to pick one of these realms. Lurikeen: Adept at magic and stealth, these little people look like elves and taste like elves. They are forest dwelling and naturals at nature magic. Firbolg: A mix of man and giant, these guys are huge. Celt: Close to nature, these folks make good druids and also have natural fighting and song abilities. Kobold: Small and wiry little people that make natural rogues and excel at those skills.Įlf: Humanoid and specializing in magic, the elves are the rulers of Hibernia. Troll: Huge and slow, but they hit really hard and can learn shamanistic magic. Dwarf: Stocky, sturdy, and built to last, the dwarves make good clerics and fighters. Norseman: Much like the Britons, they are good at everything, yet excellent at nothing. Saracen: These desert dwelling people excel at anything that involves quickness and dexterity making them perfect rogues.
Avalonian: Most adept at magic of all of the Albion races, they come from the magical city of Avalon where the great Merlin himself was from. Highlander: Big and burly, don't tell these guys they look girly in those skirts. You'll be able to choose from the three distinct realms, Albion, Midgard, and Hibernia, in order to help that realm get as powerful as it can.Įach of the realms have four races to choose from as well as several different classes:īritons: The average human and utility player on Albion. Still, while things aren't going their best, the residents of Albion are still fighting strong against the incursion of the other two realms. And seeing as his leadership was pretty much what was holding back the powers of Hibernia and Midgard, things have started to go a little bit worse for the island of Albion.
The background to the game is actually simple enough: it seems that the good King Arthur is dead. So, in the name of gaming, we plopped in the beta and went running around in the realm for a while to check things out. Dark Age of Camelot is hoping to attract players to their game through the addition of recognizable history and mythology along with some interesting PvP elements that may just make this one of the first real team based massively multiplayer experiences. Well, why stop now? There are a lot of these MMORPGs coming out in the near future, all with different tricks to get people to play them. I seem to be starting a lot of previews lately with "there are a whole lot of these MMORPGs coming out in the near future," and then I proceed to tell you a little more about why this game is going to be different than all of the rest.
